DERUTA - Lot 10
DERUTA Large polychrome enameled earthenware vase decorated with foliage, flowers and fruit, a coat of arms in the center. Modern work, in the taste of the Italian Renaissance. Missing enamel. H_68 cm. Deruta ceramics is an Italian craft tradition dating back to the 13th century, originating from the town of Deruta in Umbria, famous for its glazed terracotta pottery, particularly majolica. Over the centuries, the town has developed refined decoration techniques, with motifs such as Raffaellesco (inspired by a dragon by Raphael) and Ricco Deruta (composed of floral and arabesque motifs). Deruta craftsmen use techniques such as pouncing (transferring motifs using stencils) and high-temperature firing to create long-lasting, brilliant pieces, often adorned with metallic reflections thanks to the lustro technique. Today, ceramics production in Deruta remains vibrant, with more than 200 workshops, where craftsmen perpetuate this ancestral know-how while innovating. The Deruta Regional Ceramics Museum traces the history of this tradition, and schools such as the Istituto Statale d'Arte ensure that this heritage is passed on.
