[ENCYCLOPEDIA PLATES] - DIDEROT & D'ALEMBERT - Antiquités. Paris, s.e., circa 1762; in-folio, 11 plates, modern half-brown calf binding with small corners, 5-rib mute spine, speckled edges. Denis Diderot, born in Langres in 1713 and died in Paris in 1784, was a French Enlightenment writer, philosopher and encyclopedist, as well as a novelist, playwright, storyteller, essayist, dialogue writer, art critic, literary critic and translator. Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, sometimes written "Jean le Rond d'Alembert", was a French mathematician, physicist, philosopher and encyclopedist, born in 1717 in Paris, where he died in 1783. One of the most famous works of the 18th century. A gigantic undertaking in terms of volume, length of publication, number of contributors, and the difficulties encountered by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d'Alembert in the face of state and religious censorship.
