PALISSOT DE MONTENOY (Charles) - La Dunciade. London, s.e., - Lot 704
PALISSOT DE MONTENOY (Charles) - La Dunciade. London, s.e., 1781; small in-12, frontispiece, 299 pp. bound in contemporary full marbled calf, ornate smooth spine, red morocco title-pieces, yellow-painted edges. Cazin edition. Charles Palissot de Montenoy, born in Nancy on January 3, 1730 and died in Paris on June 15, 1814, was a little-known French playwright, an admirer and disciple of Voltaire like Antoine de Rivarol, but paradoxically often denounced as an anti-enlightenment opponent of the philosophical party, notably for his criticism of Diderot and the Encyclopedists. He is the author of the comedy Les Philosophes, which was a huge success and a scandal in 1760. Consultant: Mr. Philippe HENRY
