[MANUSCRIT] - CALLOT HÉRAUT D'ARMES DES DUECHEZ DE LORRAINE - Lot 596
Nancy, Chez l'auteur, circa 1800; small in-4, approx. 300 pp. 19th century binding, half red calf with small corners, smooth spine decorated. Title pages and preface handwritten around the middle of the 19th century, reproduced from a work by Jean Callot. The work is then entirely engraved with a shield surrounded by a helmet palm in broad vegetal leaves. An amateur has filled in the table from 1 to 299. Only about 1 third of the work is filled in by the author. This third consists of the coat of arms in period colors, usually with a text containing the family name and information about the family. Ex-libris Alexandre de Haldat du Lys. A handwritten note also gives the provenance as Thierry Sollet-Telot. Charles Nicolas Alexandre de Haldat du Lys, born in 1769 and died in Nancy in 1852, was a French physician and physicist. He also contributed to the re-establishment of the Société libre des sciences, lettres et arts de Nancy, of which he became perpetual secretary, along with Coster and Mollevault. In 1802, he published a work on the chemical properties of ink. He was also interested in magnetism, as evidenced by his publications Exposition de la doctrine magnétique, published in Nancy in 1852, and Note sur le fantôme magnétique. The de Haldat family is linked to that of Joan of Arc through the marriage of Catherine d'Arc, Joan's niece, to Georges de Haldat. For this reason, in 1816 Charles de Haldat added "du Lys" to his surname (another name of the d'Arc family) and in 1818 published treatises on the authenticity of Joan's house.
