MOUSIN (I.) - Discours de l'yvresse, et yvrongnerie. Auquel - Lot 659
Toul, Par Sebastien Philippe Imprimeur Juré, 1612; in-8, XXII ppnch. + 390 pp. bound in contemporary full marbled calf, smooth ornate spine, red morocco title page, painted edges. The preliminary leaves contain a dedication to Duke Henry, Latin verses by Berthemin, a French ode by Christophe Cachet and four pieces by Sébastien Thiéry "the most curious of which is an acrostic on the name of Monsieur Mousin, dialoguing in feminine rithm on the subject of his book with a muse counterfeiting an echo". "Jean Mousin, learned physician, born in Nancy in 1573, died in 1645 near that city, in his house at Buttegnémont, where, during thirty years of philosophical retirement, the sick frequently visited him. His Discours de l'ivresse et de l'ivrognerie (Discourse on Drunkenness and Drunkenness), which is not a very rare book, and whose typographical execution is mediocre at best, is not to be missed. It is a just tribute that bibliophiles pay to the memory of Mousin, and to the erudition, always judicious and sometimes spiritual, that he was able to spread in this work" Beaupré 279. A Latin edition appeared in 1614 in Toul with Sébastein Philippe under the title Pandora Bacchica. Very rare work printed in Toul. Noël 5616. Langlard 304. Consultant: Mr. Philippe HENRY
