Please enter the description...Located in the heart of a city with a remarkable cultural heritage, LANDRE STRASBOURG Auction House has, over the years, developed an approach to its craft based on the discovery, promotion, and circulation of artworks, driven by constant exchanges with an international circle of collectors, connoisseurs, and cultural institutions. Since its founding, it has pursued a single ambition: to bring unique works to light, reveal their full artistic significance, and contribute to their preservation, so that the most striking creations continue to transcend eras and enrich the history of art.
Tomi Ungerer’s work admirably illustrates this ability of creativity to transcend borders and generations. Born in Strasbourg, the artist’s career spanned a much broader geographical scope, from New York to Germany, and to the many countries where his work is recognized today. As a cartoonist, illustrator, and incisive observer of his time, he has built a instantly recognizable world, characterized by a rare freedom of expression, boundless imagination, and a unique perspective on society. Behind the humor and poetry lies a critical, sometimes irreverent, yet always deeply human perspective. This richness explains the special place he occupies in the contemporary art scene and the renewed interest in him from both longtime collectors and the younger generations who are discovering his work today.
The international attention his work has received, as well as the numerous requests from art lovers and collectors, led us to conceive a project entirely dedicated to his body of work. It therefore seemed natural to us to bring together, within a single department featuring annual auctions, the diverse perspectives and sensibilities that make up his body of work. These themed auctions offer opportunities to explore the various expressions of his talent, as well as to gauge the growing prominence he holds in collections and on the international art market. Our Tomi UNGERER department is, above all, a celebration of the vitality of a body of work that defies classification and whose modernity remains intact.
This approach reflects a vision of the auctioneer’s craft in which the transmission of art holds as much importance as the transaction itself. A work of art derives its value not only from the perspective of the person who acquires it: it is part of a history, inspires interpretations, and continues to live on through those who discover it and share it. It is this cultural and human dimension that our auction house seeks to champion by organizing events that bring artists, collectors, and the public together. Dedicating an event to Tomi Ungerer is thus a way to pay tribute to an artist whose influence and recognition continue to grow, but also to affirm our commitment to actively participating in the international art scene. By combining expertise, market knowledge, scholarly rigor, and enthusiasm, we aim to help keep the great works of our time alive and secure them a lasting place in the artistic heritage of tomorrow.
