YAZD Rug - Lot 73
YAZD Rug
Iran. Mid-20th century.
Wool pile on a cotton backing.
The outer frame consists of a navy-blue main border featuring a garland of intertwined old rose, royal blue, and emerald foliage, within which are arranged four angular medallions and four turquoise floral side panels, embellished with a floral wreath. Four cream and ivory counter-borders featuring garlands of small flowers complete the design. It encloses a long, ruby-red field with alcoves, from which emerges a large, oblong, cruciform medallion with arrow-shaped marine-blue points, featuring rich polychrome floral decoration inside and a bluish floral wreath on the outside. The medallion is itself delineated by an inner frame in royal blue with a scattering of small flowers, divided into four angular panels in ivory and sky blue featuring a star-shaped floral composition. Ivory interior highlighting and a wreath of multicolored flowers that follows the contours of the field. Serrated ruby border. A sublime decoration known as the “holy book cover” motif.
