TABRIZ Rug (Iran) - Lot 58
TABRIZ Rug (Iran) Mid-20th century. Wool pile on a cotton backing. A large medallion in ivory, old gold, navy, and cream with a floral motif, along with its counterparts, is set against a cherry-red field covered with an intricate pattern of multicolored floral stems. Four rich diagonal ivory medallions with floral motifs, as well as two baluster vases, embellish the design. The main border features Moorish crenellations in positive and negative patterns of old gold and navy blue, adorned with “tchis” and foliage. It is flanked by two outer counter-borders—one turquoise with small flowers and the other old gold with a plant motif—and by an inner counter-border featuring a succession of cream and ivory panels and small medallions (in the Kufic style) with floral compositions. Four enormous angular celadon corollas, along with two ivory lateral projections—all six adorned with plant motifs—complete the design. Ruby-colored outer braid. Signature in a small medallion. Great elegance. H_390 cm L_298 cm Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
