Rudolf Friedrich August HENNEBERG (1825–1876) - Lot 243
Rudolf Friedrich August HENNEBERG (1825–1876) Couple Embraced in the Woods Oil on canvas. H_44.5 cm W_29 cm Restored. Monogrammed in the lower right corner. Canvas manufacturer’s stamp on the back. Originally from Germany, Rudolf Henneberg moved to Paris in the 1850s, where he studied under Thomas Couture. He exhibited at the Salon, where he received a medal in 1857. He moved to Italy in the 1860s and returned there the following decade. Several of his works are housed at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. His battle scenes echo the masterpieces of his teacher. Characterized by a strong narrative intensity, they demonstrate his skill at depicting turmoil. His portraits, on the other hand, are imbued with a great poetic tenderness, evident here in this couple embracing in the woods.
