French School, circa 1750, follower of François BOUCHER (170 - Lot 176
French School, circa 1750, follower of François BOUCHER (1703–1770) The Courtesan in Love. The Magnificent. Pair of canvases that can be hung as a pair above a doorway, in the grisaille style. H_60 cm W_130 cm H_60 cm W_140 cm (for *The Courtesan in Love*). The subjects of our paintings are taken from compositions by Boucher, engraved by Nicolas de Larmessin (1684–1755), illustrating La Fontaine’s Fables (1743). The rectangular format, curved at the bottom, and the grisaille technique suggest compositions designed to be integrated into wood paneling, likely as overdoor panels or trumeaus intended to adorn an aristocratic salon. Slight scratches and a few missing areas
