Gaetano MERCHI (1747–1823), after - Lot 79
Gaetano MERCHI (1747–1823), after Terracotta bust of an actress as Urania, likely depicting Mademoiselle Guimard. It rests on a circular, fluted white marble pedestal set upon a square base painted to imitate green sea marble. Paris. Last quarter of the 18th century. H_57.5 cm (Total) H_42 cm (Bust) The facial features are similar to those in other portraits believed to depict Marie-Madeleine Guimard (1743–1816), known as Mademoiselle Guimard, including the marble bust created by Merchi in 1779 and housed at the BNF, the Opéra Library and Museum (inv. MUS.143m). This bust is comparable to the portraits of actors, singers, and dancers created in Paris during the last quarter of the 18th century by the Italian sculptor Gaetano Merchi, a native of Brescia.
