An exceptional collection of approximately 200 emergency coi - Lot 9
An exceptional collection of approximately 200 emergency coins issued by German cities from the end of World War I through the hyperinflation crisis of 1922 to make up for the shortage of official currency.
Minted in aluminum, copper, bronze, zinc, mild steel, steel, or alloys, they feature an exceptional array of designs referencing German history and culture: landscapes, ruins, buildings, bridges, as well as depictions of German folk tales, characters, scenes, heraldic symbols, patriotic motifs (soldiers, weapons, factories), and cultural figures such as philosophers, musicians, and writers.
All are in near-original mint condition, with some displaying a superb medallic patina.
The set is presented with the two-volume work written by Peter Menzel in 2005.
This comprehensive work, which catalogs all coins produced during this period, remains the definitive reference to this day.
A metal case is included.
