Note: Created in 1962, this work belongs to a pivotal period in Martin Barré’s exploration of line and pictorial space. Against a largely unpainted light background, the colored lines structure the composition and create a tension with the empty space of the canvas. This period immediately precedes the artist’s use of spray paint beginning in 1963, which would further his exploration of gesture, line, and the fragmentation of space.
