Cecil de Blaquiere HOWARD (1888–1956) - Lot 6
Cecil de Blaquiere HOWARD (1888–1956) Fatigue, circa 1919 Bronze sculpture with black patina Signed on the base, numbered 2/8 Stamped C. VALSUANI / CIRE / PERDUE H_27 cm Related works: - Sotheby’s London, “19th & 20th Century Sculpture” auction, July 12, 2017, lot no. 117, “Fatigue” sold for €8,470. Exhibitions of this model: - New York, Whitney Studio Galleries, 1925; - Buffalo, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, 1925. Comparative bibliography: - Cecil Howard, University of Georgia Press / National Sculpture Society, 1950. - Janis Conner and Joel Rosenkranz, *Rediscoveries in American Sculpture: Studio Works, 1893–1939*, University of Texas Press, Austin, 1989. - Sotheby’s, 19th & 20th Century Sculpture, including works from Cecil Howard’s Studio, London, July 12, 2017, lot 117, p. 92, another example of the model reproduced. Note: Created around 1919, *Fatigue* is part of Cecil Howard’s exploration of the human figure and bodily expression. The crouched pose, the face thrown back, and the synthetic construction of the forms convey, with great economy of means, the state of exhaustion suggested by the title. The sculpture was among the works Howard exhibited in the United States as early as 1925.
