Paul VERA (1882–1957) - Lot 255
Paul VERA (1882–1957) Nude from Behind in an Armchair Pastel drawing on paper. H: 69.5 cm W: 45 cm Monogrammed in the lower right corner. Inscription on the back: “Paul Vera, student of Maurice Denis.” A versatile artist, Paul Vera (1882–1957) was a painter, printmaker, illustrator, tapestry designer, ceramicist, and decorator. Born in Paris, he studied at the Académie Julian, the Ateliers d’Art Sacré, the École des Beaux-Arts, and later the Académie Ranson. The Nabis painters Maurice Denis and Paul Serusier were among his teachers. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne beginning in 1904. He founded a group called L’Atelier Français with Louis Süe, André Groult, Gustave Louis Jaulmes, Roger de La Fresnaye, and André Mare. This work, created in the early 20th century, straddles the boundaries between the Pont-Aven School, Expressionism, and Fauvism. The Municipal Museum of Saint-Germain-en-Laye houses a significant collection of works by Paul Vera: watercolors, paintings, tapestries, engravings, ceramics, and porcelain.
