Son of a baker from Cassel, in the Hauts-de-France region, Alexis Bafcop trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he was awarded the silver medal in 1830.
From 1831 to 1840, he exhibited portraits and genre scenes at the Salon. He certainly discovered Alfred Johannot's painting, exhibited in 1833.
The subject deals with an episode in the Fronde between the Prince de Condé and Mazarin during the regency of Marie de Médicis, from 1651 to 1653. Allied with her cousin and father, Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchesse de Montpensier, known as La Grande Mademoiselle, decided to occupy Orléans to prevent the royal army from gaining access. She forced her way into the city by knocking down an old burnt gate.
Here, Alexis Bafcop takes up Alfred Johannot's composition in the main lines. He paints the scene like a sketch, leaving out the details of the physiognomy.
This work is reminiscent of Eugène Lami's style.
