The Daumenkrug, or thumb jug, appeared in Germany in the early 17th century, at a time when beer was a popular and cultural beverage. Most often made of terracotta or wood, accompanied by a pewter frame, these objects were rooted in local social life, while fulfilling a utilitarian function. Our example is in keeping with this popular tradition, but is distinguished by its rich ornamentation of interlacing and friezes, typical of German production.
Our example clearly stands out from the more common German salted stoneware pieces, an example of which can be viewed at the Musée du Louvre under reference MRR 109.
