Vertumne and Pomona, an artistic theme from Roman mythology:
The nymph Pomona (deity of fruit, skilled in garden cultivation) and the god Vertumne (god of the seasons, plant growth, gardens and fruit trees).
The nymph Pomona, who was fleeing the Country Gods and their virile violence, was seduced by Vertumne, who fell in love with her and took on the appearance of an old woman to approach her and plead the cause of Love.
Vertumne's face can be seen in the tree trunk, with Pomona on the right.
There are various metamorphoses, including this one.
Carton inspired by various paintings (Francesco Melzi, Jules Romain, Abraham Bloemaert, Henrick Goltzius, Pierre Paul Rubens, Antoine Van Dyck, François Boucher).
Border decorated with rows of polychrome flower garlands surrounded by finely drawn twisted foliage.
