Jean Caumont established his workshop and store on rue Traversière. His works, in the Transition and Louis XVI styles, show great variety in both their manufacture and the materials used. Caumont excelled above all in the manufacture of secretaries and chests of drawers. Their often sophisticated compositions are elegant and full of finesse. His work includes furniture with mahogany or satinwood veneers, and colored wood marquetry, decorated with landscapes, flowers, branches or musical instruments, often finely inlaid with ivory or mother-of-pearl.
