Spectacular gilt and repoussé brass ewer on a circular basin - Lot 9
Spectacular gilt and repoussé brass ewer on a circular basin. Flanders. 17th century. H_51 cm D_44,5 cm Originating in Antiquity, the ewer was originally a metal jug used to pour water during ablutions or rituals. Its religious use continued in the Middle Ages as a symbol of purification, while at the same time entering the domestic sphere. It was in 17th-century Flanders, a major goldsmithing region, that these objects were turned into ceremonial objects, with larger proportions and more complex decoration. Our example, despite its simple decoration, illustrates the transition of these objects towards a social and economic dimension.
