Robert HEITZ (1895-1984) Alsatian woman with a stork Oil on canvas, signed lower left. H_64 cm L_52 cm Robert Heitz occupies a singular place in Alsace's cultural history, as an artist, art historian and heritage activist. These two activities have deeply influenced his artistic production, giving his work a reflective and erudite dimension. As a painter and draughtsman, Heitz showed a constant interest in architecture and urban landscapes. Cities, and Strasbourg in particular, became privileged sites of observation for him. Streets, squares and monuments are depicted with a sensitivity attentive to the atmosphere of the place. This approach testifies to an eye deeply nourished by historical knowledge. For Heitz, depicting the land means more than just rendering its appearance: it also means revealing its memory and cultural stratification. Through his commitment to heritage preservation and his artistic activity, Robert Heitz contributes to affirming the role of art in transmitting the history and identity of a territory. His works can be seen at the Musée Alsacien and the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg, as well as at the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar.
