Paul LESCHHORN (1876-1951) - Lot 95
Paul LESCHHORN (1876-1951) Snowy mountain landscape Oil on canvas, signed lower left, dated 1928. H_80 cm W_65 cm Paul Leschhorn's work bears witness to the rhythms of nature and the transformations of the land. The notion of landscape is central to his work. Leschhorn is best known for his paintings and prints depicting the mountains and the winter season, as well as his rural scenes depicting the relationship between man and his natural environment. His style is characterized by a rigorous construction of space, particularly in his stencils and prints, where the nuances of light and relief of the depicted motif are signified by the simple shapes of his flat tints of color. Through this constant attention to composition and light, Paul Leschhorn contributed to enriching the tradition of landscape painting in Alsace, introducing a modern, graphic sensibility, while remaining faithful to direct observation of the motif. Although he also painted extensively in the Swiss mountains, most of Leschhorn's work is preserved in Alsace's public institutions: the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg, the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar and the Musée Historique in Haguenau.
