Emmanuel Michel dit Many BENNER (1873-1965) - Lot 55
Emmanuel Michel dit Many BENNER (1873-1965) Nude with sheet Oil on canvas, signed lower left. H_55 cm W_46 cm Emmanuel dit "Many" Benner is best known for his paintings of female figures, often inspired by Antiquity or mythology. His paintings feature idealized young women, sometimes surrounded by natural landscapes bathed in soft light. This poetic, contemplative atmosphere brings his work closer to a Symbolist sensibility. Her style is characterized by a delicate treatment of skin tones and fabrics, as well as by a particular attention to color harmony, despite a sometimes bold colorimetry. Many Benner's importance in the history of Alsatian art also lies in his ability to link regional production to the major European artistic trends of his time. Trained and active partly in Paris, he helped to make Alsatian artists known beyond the region. In a territory marked by the political upheavals of the second half of the XIXᵉ century, his work helped maintain an artistic dialogue between Alsace and the French cultural scene. Today, his work is preserved among prestigious art institutions of international stature, such as the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, but also Alsace, where the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg and the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar regularly feature the artist.
