Jean-Jacques Waltz, better known under the pseudonym Hansi, occupies a singular place in the artistic and cultural history of Alsace. Illustrator, caricaturist and writer, he developed a body of work profoundly linked to the political context and identity of the region at the turn of the XXᵉ century. Hansi excelled in the art of the miniature scene: picturesque villages, lively alleyways, processions of children in traditional costume or characters typical of Alsatian society make up a universe that is both tender and satirical. But behind this apparent lightness lies a marked political dimension. In his illustrated albums, the artist expresses with humor and irony his attachment to Alsatian culture and his criticism of German authority during the period of annexation. His images thus become powerful vectors of identity expression. Hansi's work has had a profound impact on the collective imagination of Alsace. His widely circulated images helped shape a lasting representation of the region, combining humor, memory and cultural affirmation. His work is widely represented in Colmar, where the Musée Hansi is dedicated to the artist and where the full range of his work can be seen, notably at the Bibliothèque des Dominicains and the Musée Unterlinden.
