Charles Spindler's artistic personality extended far beyond the realm of painting, embracing all the decorative arts. A versatile artist, painter, marker, cabinetmaker, writer and major player in the Alsatian artistic revival, he played a key role in redefining regional cultural identity at the turn of the XIXᵉ and XXᵉ centuries.
Spindler is particularly well known for his work in marquetry, which he helped to profoundly renew. By introducing motifs inspired by Alsatian folklore, landscapes and everyday life, he transformed this decorative art into a veritable narrative medium. His compositions, made from carefully selected woods, reveal a keen sense of color and structure.
But it was painting and illustration that Spindler began his prolific artistic career. The scenes he depicts (village festivals, traditional costumes, Vosges landscapes) contribute to the construction of a regional imaginary strongly marked by memory and a sense of belonging, testifying to his deep attachment to the rural world and popular traditions.
Spindler was also a unifying figure among Alsatian artists of his time. In particular, he played a decisive role in the creation of the Saint-Léonard artistic circle, a veritable intellectual hotbed where painters, writers and craftsmen met. It became one of the most dynamic centers of the Alsatian cultural renaissance.
He was also one of the main players in the Kunsthafe, a cultural movement created by Auguste Michel, where artists, chefs and patrons of the arts from the region met for banquets.
His works are almost exclusively preserved in Alsatian museums, including the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg, the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar, the Musée Spindler and the Musée Alsacien in Strasbourg.
