Joseph Ferdinand GUELDRY (1858-1945) - Lot 27
Joseph Ferdinand GUELDRY (1858-1945) Half-timbered houses and storks by a stream Oil on canvas, signed lower right. H_115 cm L_72 cm Joseph Ferdinand Gueldry established himself as one of the most attentive painters of river landscapes and the activities that take place there. Trained in Paris in Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio, he acquired a solid academic mastery that he applied to a subject that was relatively unexplored at the time: the daily life of rivers and canals. His work focuses mainly on the banks of the Seine and Marne rivers, where he observes with remarkable precision the gestures of washerwomen, bargemen or workers responsible for maintaining the banks. These seemingly modest scenes reveal a constant attention to the interactions between man, water and the transforming urban space. Gueldry's uniqueness lies in his ability to combine descriptive accuracy with atmospheric sensitivity. Water, recurrent in his compositions, becomes a pictorial motif. Shifting reflections, transparencies and luminous vibrations structure the painting's surface, giving his landscapes an almost musical dimension. While his style remains rooted in the naturalist tradition, it nevertheless reflects a modern sensitivity to light and movement. The effects of reflections and chromatic variations reflect the diffuse influence of Impressionist research, while retaining the rigor of drawing inherited from his academic training. Joseph Ferdinand Gueldry's work is conserved in various renowned institutions, including the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
