Charles Marie BOUTON (Paris, 1781 - 1853) Underground room Pen, brown ink and oil on cardboard Annotated 'Ruins of a monastery / Dunkeld (Scotland) Cte Forbin' in pen and brown ink on verso and '1861' on stretcher on verso H_21 cm, W_26.5 cm This work is based on the composition of a painting by Charles Marie Bouton recently presented by La Nouvelle Athènes gallery (Salle souterraine, circa 1824, oil on board, 21 x 27.5 cm, signed Bouton lower left, provenance: Thomas Agnew & Sons gallery, London). It joined the collections of the Monastère Royal de Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain) thanks to a purchase by the museum's Société des Amis in 2020. This work could be a preparatory sketch for the Brou painting.
