Lindsay Kemp, born in Birkenhead (England) in 1938, is a British dancer, choreographer, mime artist and stage director, renowned for his influence on theater, contemporary dance and popular music. Trained at London's Royal Ballet School, Kemp developed a multidisciplinary approach where mime, dance and theatricality meet to create spectacular and poetic performances. Founder of his own company in the 1960s, he won international acclaim for his performances that blend fantasy, eroticism and visual symbolism.
Kemp is also credited with inspiring and training many iconic artists, including David Bowie, with whom he shares a sensibility for total theater and the stage persona. His creations explore themes of desire, identity, marginality and metamorphism, blending body, costume and light to produce dreamlike, provocative worlds. His career, which spanned more than fifty years, spanned dance, theater, film and opera, making him a major figure in contemporary performance art. Lindsay Kemp passed away in 2018, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of performance, where poetry and transgression meet.
