Carmelo ARDEN-QUIN (1913-2010) - Lot 103
Carmelo ARDEN-QUIN (1913-2010) Untitled Color lithograph, signed lower right and numbered 197/250 lower left H_ 100 cm W_ 70 cm Carmelo Arden-Quin (1913-2010) was a Uruguayan painter and visual artist of French origin, recognized as one of the leading figures of concrete art and abstract geometry in Latin America. Born in Montevideo in 1913, he spent his childhood between Uruguay and France, which enabled him to develop a cosmopolitan outlook on art from an early age.In the 1940s and 1950s, Arden-Quin became fully involved in the art concret movement, inspired by the research of Kandinsky, Mondrian and the European avant-gardes, but adapting them to a Latin American context. In 1945, he co-founded the "Círculo y Cuadrado" group and, in 1948, the "Arte Concreto-Invención" movement, which advocated a purely abstract, geometric art based on color, line and form, devoid of all figurative or symbolic references.Carmelo Arden-Quin received many awards during his career, notably for his contribution to abstract and concrete art, and his works were exhibited in museums in Latin America and Europe, including the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales in Montevideo and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires. He died in 2010, leaving a lasting artistic legacy in which geometric abstraction became a universal language, making him a pioneer of Latin American concrete art.
