Francis Bacon, born in Dublin in 1909 and died in Madrid in 1992, was a major British painter of the XXᵉ century, renowned for his powerful, tormented and expressive works. Self-taught, he developed a unique style blending figuration and distortion of the human figure, exploring the violence, suffering and fragility of existence. Inspired by ancient art, Picasso and photography, he transforms his references into dramatic compositions in which bodies and faces appear distorted in abstract, oppressive spaces. Bacon frequented the London and European art scene, forging links with writers and artists such as Lucian Freud and Auerbach, as well as photographers and intellectuals who influenced his vision.
