Alexandre NOLL (1890-1970) - Lot 15
Alexandre NOLL (1890-1970) Natural wood bowl. Monogrammed on the reverse. H_16 cm W_ 13 cm D_ 8 cm Alexandre NOLL was a French sculptor born in Paris in 1890 and died in 1970. After studying drawing and painting, he turned to wood sculpture in the 1930s, exploring abstract forms inspired by nature. Self-taught, NOLL developed a personal sculptural language, working mainly with driftwood and tree wood, which he transformed into clean, vertical abstract forms. His work fits into the context of modern art in France, where abstract sculpture is developing alongside concrete art and traditional craftsmanship. Alexandre NOLL exhibited regularly in Paris from the 1950s onwards, and was recognized for his ability to reveal the intrinsic form of wood in simple, structured sculptures. His work has influenced many contemporary sculptors through its focus on material and form.
