Jean-Claude NOVARO (1943-2015) - Lot 14
Jean-Claude NOVARO (1943-2015) Blown glass bottle with bubble inclusions and metallic oxides. Signed under the base. H_ 16 cm Jean-Claude Novaro, born on October 18, 1943 in Antibes in the Alpes-Maritimes, is a major figure in French art glassmaking of the XXᵉ century. The youngest of four children, he grew up in the village of Biot, Provence, where he discovered his vocation for blown glass at an early age. At just 14, he left school after his mother's death to join the Biot glassworks, run by master glassmaker Eloi Monod, who became his mentor. His work is distinguished by constant technical and chromatic research: he experiments with inclusions of precious metals (gold, silver, bronze), plays with oxides and enamels to create effects of color and luminescence, and explores unprecedented sculptural forms. In 1991, he developed a luminescent glass formula capable of absorbing and then restoring light, a rare innovation in the history of blown glass.Jean-Claude Novaro took part in a number of prestigious exhibitions, notably at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1987, where several of his pieces were presented at the opening inaugurated by the Minister of Culture. His work has since been exhibited and collected worldwide, in Japan, Germany, Belgium, the United States and elsewhere, and features in museums dedicated to contemporary glass.
