Théodore DECK (1823-1891) - Lot 57
Théodore DECK (1823-1891) Décor by Amédée Jullien (1819-1887). Large circular dish in glazed earthenware decorated with an animated winter landscape. Signed. D_49.5 cm Théodore Deck (1823-1891) and Amédée Jullien (1819-1887) were two French artists of the XIXᵉ century, each outstanding in his own field. Théodore Deck, a renowned ceramist, distinguished himself with his innovative earthenware, blending Islamic, Persian and Japanese influences with French decorative art. His experiments with enamels and metallic lustres made him a major figure in 19thᵉ century ceramics, contributing to the revival of the decorative arts in France. Amédée Jullien, meanwhile, devoted himself to historical and genre painting, illustrating scenes from French history, notably the Napoleonic era and the Middle Ages, with a precise, detailed academic style. If Deck fascinated with the richness and modernity of his ceramic decorations, Jullien captivated with the precision and drama of his pictorial compositions.
