Paul Rémy (1897-1981) was a French painter born in Nancy, where he also died. A student at the École nationale supérieure d'art de Nancy in Jules Larcher's studio, he began his career inspired by the First World War, notably with depictions of trenches. Over time, he moved on to more varied subjects such as nudes, flowers, landscapes and scenes of daily life, making a name for himself with his depictions of women, bouquets and bohemian figures. His work, which also includes still lifes and portraits, testifies to a solid technical mastery and a coloristic sensibility typical of the Lorraine school of the XXᵉ century, even if some critics have noted a progressive simplification of his style.
