Georges Janin (1884-1955), born in Woippy, Moselle, and died in Nancy, was a French master glassmaker and landscape painter, heir to a family tradition of glassmakers since his father, Joseph Janin, had trained his workshop in the art of glass. Trained at Nancy's École des Beaux-Arts, he first worked with his father before setting up his own studio in 1909, then collaborating with Joseph Benoît from 1912 to 1921. Janin is best known for his stained-glass windows, created for churches and public buildings in Nancy and Lorraine, such as the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes and the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Nancy, in which he exploits color, light and material with refinement, combining tradition with a modern sensibility. At the same time, he is a landscape painter and watercolorist, depicting Lorraine's atmospheres and landscapes in a moderate, realistic style. His work reflects the commitment to regional glassmaking and the continuity of the family tradition, while enriching the region's architectural and decorative heritage.
