Charles-François Chatelain (1802-1873), born in Nancy, was a French architect, draughtsman and watercolorist, a major figure in Lorraine's architectural heritage in the XIXᵉ century. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Achille Leclère, he returned to Nancy from 1824-1825 and was appointed Architecte du département de la Meurthe in 1825, a post he held until 1845, as well as Architecte des Édifices diocésains de Nancy until his death. He designed numerous public and religious buildings, including the Nancy reformatory, the gendarmerie and the city's passenger and freight station. At the same time, Chatelain produced drawings, sketches, lithographs and watercolors, depicting Place Stanislas, Porte Sainte-Catherine and other elements of Lorraine's heritage. Involved in civic life, he was a member of the Nancy town council and deputy mayor, and was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1866. His work combines architectural rigor, heritage restoration and graphic sensibility, making him a key player in art and architecture in Lorraine in the XIXᵉ century.
