Jacques Grüber (1870-1936) was a glass artist, decorator and master of the French Art Nouveau movement, closely associated with the École de Nancy, the focal point of the decorative arts revival in eastern France. Born in Metz, he studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, where he developed a solid technical and artistic training in glasswork and the decorative arts. In 1893, he moved to Nancy and played an active role in the creation and dissemination of Art Nouveau in the region, in collaboration with artists and craftsmen from the École de Nancy.
A specialist in stained glass, Grüber also created mosaics, decorative furniture, carved woodwork and interior decorations, always in harmony with the principles of Art Nouveau: sinuous lines, stylized floral and plant motifs, integration of light and materials into an overall composition. His stained-glass windows, designed for religious buildings, public buildings and private homes, are renowned for their elegance, finesse and rich colors. His most famous commissions include stained glass windows for churches in Lorraine and private interiors, often in collaboration with other members of the École de Nancy.
Grüber also took part in international exhibitions, helping to make French Art Nouveau known beyond its borders and to disseminate its decorative innovations. His work combines technical mastery with artistic sensitivity, emphasizing the unity of the decorative arts: each creation, whether stained glass or furniture, is part of a global vision of space and aesthetics.
He trained numerous apprentices and workers, passing on his know-how and contributing to the continuity of the art of glassmaking in France. Jacques Grüber died in 1936.
