Auguste-Michel Colle (1872-1949), born in Baccarat, Lorraine, and died in Batz-sur-Mer, was a French painter renowned for his landscapes. Orphaned at an early age, he started out as a gilder and engraver at the Baccarat crystal glassworks before devoting himself to painting, encouraged by the painter Charles Peccatte. Between 1903 and 1911, with the support of collector Eugène Corbin, he produced almost 500 works, mainly inspired by Lorraine landscapes. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons and in Nancy, where his paintings were hailed for their sensitivity and mastery of light. After 1911, Colle broadened his subjects and places of inspiration, painting landscapes of Savoy, Corsica, North Africa and above all Brittany, near Batz-sur-Mer. His style, marked by attention to light and atmosphere, sometimes shows Neo-Impressionist influences, while remaining faithful to the poetic realism of the landscape. His works can be found in several public collections, including Nantes, Nancy, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and the Senate in Paris.
