Marie-Charles Peccatte (1870-1962), born in Baccarat and died in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, was a French landscape painter with a deep attachment to Lorraine. Trained at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, he favored plein-air painting and exhibited at the Salon de Nancy from 1888. His post-impressionist style is characterized by a particular attention to light, atmosphere and landscapes of rivers, forests, tall trees and ruins, painted with brush or knife to play with texture and matter. Faithful to his region, Peccatte played an active role in local cultural life: town councillor, member and honorary president of the Société Philomatique Vosgienne, he campaigned for the creation of a municipal museum, of which he became curator. In 1944, a fire destroyed his home and almost all his works, which he then set about recreating. His works were exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne, and some were acquired by the French State.
