Hector GUIMARD (Lyon 1867 - New York 1942). (Based on) - Lot 92
Hector GUIMARD (Lyon 1867 - New York 1942). (Based on) Reunion of two decorative plates from the Paris metro period, in cast iron repainted black, with openwork plant decoration. Traces of rust. H_73cm L_61cm Hector Guimard (Lyon 1867 - New York 1942), master of Art Nouveau, was the architect chosen in 1899 to design the first entrances to the Paris metro system. His creations - often referred to by extension as "metro plaques" - include "Métropolitain" signs, porticoes, balustrades, lampposts and, more rarely, covered kiosks. Made of cast iron and painted in a famous green, reminiscent of a patinated bronze, these elements are characterized by their vegetal lines and undulating lettering, which has become a veritable visual signature of Paris.
