Louis Süe (1875-1968) and André Mare (1885-1932) are two major figures of the Art Deco movement in France, whose collaboration profoundly influenced the decorative arts of the early 20th century. An architect, painter and decorator, Louis Süe studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, developing a sensibility that blended modernity and tradition. André Mare, ten years his junior, also trained in the plastic arts and distinguished himself as a painter and decorator. During the First World War, he took part in the design of military camouflage, an experience that influenced his sense of shapes and volumes. After the war, in 1919, the two men co-founded La Compagnie des Arts Français, a workshop dedicated to the creation of complete interiors: architecture, furniture, decorative objects, fabrics, wallpapers, etc. Their ambition was to reconcile craftsmen with artists and designers. Their ambition was to reconcile artistic craftsmanship and modern production, designing coherent, elegant ensembles accessible to a wealthy clientele. Their style perfectly embodies Art Deco: sober lines, controlled geometry, discreet luxury, precious materials (ebony, lacquer, glass, bronze), with a constant quest for harmony and refinement. Their most notable creations include the French pavilion at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, and sets for couturier Jean Patou. Their clientele included leading figures from the bourgeoisie and industry. In 1928, the company was bought by Jules Leleu, another great name in Art Deco furniture. After this separation, Louis Süe pursued an individual career in architecture and urban planning, while André Mare, weakened by the war, died prematurely in 1932.
