Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, he started out as a painter before taking over the family decorating business and founding Maison Leleu, which became an international benchmark for French luxury. In the 1920s-1950s, he made his mark with an elegant, sober and perfectly balanced style, marked by the use of precious woods, refined marquetry, lacquers, bronzes and fabrics specially created for his furniture. Leleu designed not only furniture, but also complete decorative ensembles, in collaboration with the finest craftsmen of his day. His prestigious projects included embassies, grand hotels, private residences and, above all, the famous liners Île-de-France, Atlantique and Normandie, symbols of transatlantic luxury.
