Jean Louis BURTIN (1878-1940) - Lot 113
Jean Louis BURTIN (1878-1940) Study of a statue in the Musée des Beaux Arts. Graphite on cardboard. Signed lower right H_63 W_39 cm. Provenance: Fonds of Nancy decorator and sculptor Jean-Louis BURTIN (1878 - 1940) Jean-Louis Burtin (1878-1940) was a French sculptor, statuary and decorator originally from Switzerland, who settled in Nancy, where he left his mark on the local art scene of the late XIXᵉ and early XXᵉ centuries. He worked closely with the architects and artists of the École de Nancy, participating in the decoration of emblematic buildings such as the Hotel Excelsior, the Chamber of Commerce and the Est Républicain building. Skilled in a variety of techniques, including plaster casting, bronze sculpture and reinforced staff decoration, he created works that blended decorative art and statuary. A passionate collector, he amassed an important collection of works of art, notably engravings by his friend Émile Friant, of which he became legatee in 1932. Burtin died in 1940 in Nancy, leaving a significant artistic legacy in the field of sculpture and regional architectural décor, even if he remains less well known to the general public.
