Spun glass and wax votive set - 18th - early 19th century - Lot 91
Spun glass and wax votive set - 18th - early 19th century This set includes a votive painting and an ex-voto reliquary in spun glass and wax, illustrating popular religious practices in France in the 18th and early 19th centuries. These objects, intended to express faith and gratitude in the face of hardship, were often offered in thanksgiving for divine healing or protection. Votive painting depicting Christ beneath the waves, symbolizing spiritual crossing and deliverance. This type of depiction, common at the time, combines the technique of spun glass - a craft process used to shape glass into supple threads - with the use of wax to accentuate relief and detail, testifying to a delicate and rare skill. Dimensions: 23 x 30 x 9 cm. An 18th-century ex-voto reliquary in spun glass and wax, used to preserve relics or as votive offerings. The hand-blown glass is of remarkable craftsmanship, typical of religious objects of the period. Dimensions: 22 x 18 x 5 cm. These objects are representative of a popular art imbued with spirituality, where fragile materials and complex techniques were used to create highly personal testimonies of faith. Their state of preservation remains satisfactory, despite the inherent fragility of the materials and the passage of time. Provenance: Estate of Docteur Marius Mozer by descent.
