Ary SCHEFFER (1795-1858) after and Jean-François POURVOYEUR - Lot 292
Ary SCHEFFER (1795-1858) after and Jean-François POURVOYEUR (1784 - 1851) engraver "La clémence de Louis XII" , "Charlemagne reçoit la soumission de Witikind" , "La bataille de Ravenne" Suite of three black engravings. Imp Bougeard. H_17 cm L_21,5 cm. Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) received his initial training in Holland, before arriving in Paris in 1811. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, in Pierre Guérin's studio, and frequented Prud'hon's, choices that led to an early break with Davidian aesthetics. In the 1820s, the artist practiced all genres - current affairs, history, literature, religion and portraiture - with equal success. A renowned portraitist under the July Monarchy, Scheffer taught drawing to the children of the future Louis-Philippe, with whom he remained close enough never to rally to Napoleon III. A staunch liberal and friend of Béranger, Scheffer was considered one of the leaders of Romanticism at the time. As a logical consequence, his Parisian studio, bought by the State on the painter's death in 1858, now bears the name Musée de la vie romantique (Museum of Romantic Life). Sale by appointment
