Late 19th century French school Large Lorraine red terracott - Lot 216
Late 19th century French school Large Lorraine red terracotta medallion featuring the profile of Claude Gelée, known as Le Lorrain (1600-1682) in low relief Dimensions: 73 x 60 cm Claude Gellée, better known by his nickname Le Lorrain, soon left his native region to spend his entire life and career in Rome. He settled there in 1613, and became a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1633. Throughout his career, he received commissions from all the popes and leading Italian families. In the first half of the 17th century, historical landscapes became an international phenomenon, and Le Lorrain, trained by two masters of landscape painting, Goffredo Wals and Agostino Tassi, was part of a wave of "classical landscapes" featuring natural elements, figures and animals, serene and harmoniously arranged in an orderly, spacious space.
