Louis-Gabriel MOREAU (1740 - 1806) Landscape Oil on parchmen - Lot 135
Louis-Gabriel MOREAU (1740 - 1806) Landscape Oil on parchment, mounted on cardboard. Signed "Moreau" on back. H_15 ; W_23 cm Louis-Gabriel Moreau (1740-1806), known as Moreau the Elder, was a French painter and draughtsman of the 18th century, best known for his landscapes. Born in Paris, he was part of the French pictorial tradition influenced by Rococo and Classicism, while also drawing inspiration from Dutch and Italian masters such as Claude Lorrain. His works depict idealized or naturalistic views of the French countryside, often animated by ruins, rivers or pastoral scenes. His style is characterized by a fine treatment of light and a palette of soft colors, giving his landscapes a poetic, serene atmosphere. Although less famous today than contemporaries such as Fragonard and Watteau, Louis-Gabriel Moreau enjoyed genuine recognition during his lifetime, exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salon. Some of his works are held in Paris museums, notably the Musée Carnavalet and the Louvre. He belonged to a family of artists, his brother Jean-Michel Moreau, known as Moreau le Jeune, also being a renowned illustrator. Expert: Cabinet Artéon
