Albert Marquet (1875-1947) was a French painter associated with the Fauve movement, although he developed a more moderate style than his contemporaries. A close friend of Henri Matisse, he studied with him at the École des Beaux-Arts and took part in the Salon d'Automne in 1905.
Marquet is best known for his urban and seascapes, often painted from windows or high up, capturing light and atmosphere with great sensitivity. His use of color is more restrained than that of other Fauves, favoring nuanced tones and structured composition. He traveled throughout Europe and North Africa, where he produced numerous views of harbors, rivers and coastlines.
His work, somewhere between tempered Fauvism and poetic realism, is distinguished by his mastery of light and reflections, particularly on water.
