Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau, born in 1700 and died in 1782, was a French physicist, botanist and agronomist. A member of the Académie royale des sciences since 1738, of which he was elected President three times, he left an important body of work as a scientific writer in fields as varied as shipbuilding and service, fishing, wheat cultivation and conservation, and forest management. Appointed Inspector General of the Navy in 1739, in 1741 he created a marine school, which in 1765 became the École des Ingénieurs-Constructeurs. Continuing Réaumur's work, in 1757 he relaunched the Description des Arts et Métiers, opposing the Encyclopedists and Buffon. This volume deals with ironmaking. Expert : M. Philippe HENRY
