The Crozat collection is a catalog of works of art translated in the form of prints accompanied by notes, published in Paris in two parts, in 1729 and 1742, under the direction of Pierre Crozat, Pierre-Jean Mariette and Anne Claude de Caylus. Second edition of 1763-1764, published by Basan (the first in 1729 with 182 plates), who also published a Recueil d'après la galerie du palais royal, comprising 45 prints from the Duc d'Orléans' collection of Italian paintings. The Recueil Crozat was rediscovered in the 20th century by such important art historians as Francis Haskell, who saw it as a new kind of work, a "paper museum", and as the true ancestor of the great modern illustrated catalogs.
